A shade of strength and enlightenment, the black Fuku-iri Daruma is a powerful lucky talisman.
Each one is hand-painted with motifs representing two of Japan’s ancient animal symbols of longevity. The daruma’s eyebrows are cranes, once said to live 1,000 years. The beard and mustache are turtles, believed to live 10,000 years. Painted in gold on the daruma’s chest is the kanji character for “fuku,” good fortune ― the mark of a vigilant guardian deity.
Traditionally red, a color believed to ward off bad luck, evil spirits and illness, the Fuku-iri Daruma design has survived more than two centuries in Japan. Imai Daruma NAYA’s lineup of 11 colors turn the Fuku-iri into a new contemporary classic. Each color is symbolic in Japan and auspicious in a slightly different way.
