A combination of traditional Japanese culture and contemporary design, the Platinum Designer's Daruma lucky dolls are stunning objets d’art. Available in silver and gold, each one has a mirror coating that gleams like polished metal.
Two traditional motifs of Japan’s ancient animal symbols of longevity are hand-painted in black. The daruma’s eyebrows are cranes, once said to live 1,000 years. The beard and mustache are turtles, believed to live 10,000 years. Painted on the daruma’s chest is the kanji character for “fuku,” good fortune ― the mark of a vigilant guardian deity.
Traditionally red, a color believed to ward off bad luck, evil spirits and illness, Imai Daruma NAYA's original daruma design has survived more than two centuries in Japan. Its new versions turn the dolls into contemporary classics.
See the Platinum Designer's Daruma series for more shimmering contemporary daruma and the Platinum Designer's Neko for a cute cat version.
